Well I should have posted my N'awlins report sooner but I've been lazy and burnt out from my trip. I left last Wednesday and got back Saturday night. I had a blast though!
Some highlights:- Cheap hotel in a historic old house right on the edge of the french quarter with a pool and a hot tub
- Taking an evening ghost/vampire tour of the French Quarter with a funny/quirky british tour guide named "Wheezy"
- Taking a daytime cemetary/voodoo tour with the same funny/quirky tour guide (I HIGHLY recommend taking both of these tours, in particular you should ask for Wheezy aka Louise Johnson if you want to have a truly excellent experience)
- Royal Street.... so cute, lovely antique and art stores, wonderful architecture
- Eating tons of raw Oysters which cost hardly anything there
- Eating spicy crawfish
- Eating Alligator and Rabbit at Coops, which both, of course... tasted like chicken
- Cafe au Lait and Beignets at Cafe du Monde
- 80's night at the 735 club on Bourbon Street
- Watching my straight friend Theo participate in a drag queen run beefcake contest at a gay club called Oz on Bourbon street
- Hanging out with a fun group of 6 other people, most of whom I hadn't met but once before this trip
- Taking a Steamboat ride on the Mississippi
- Being super drunk and winding up two nights in a row at Lafitte's sitting at the piano bar and singing along to classic tunes
- Touring the beautiful houses in the Garden District
- Playing blackjack at Harrah's and winning money!
- Eating home made Red Beans and Rice at Sheila's house
Some lowlights:- The smell, peeyew! The streets smelled bad there. Especially the closer to Bourbon street you got. Yuck! Fermented beer, garbage, you name it.... gross
- Packing for warm tropical weather and having two decently warm days with two freezing cold days and no jacket
- Total lack of sleep
- Horrible hangover
- Bourbon Street is primarily UGLY, neon lights, strip clubs, people trying to entice you in for 3 for 1 drink nights, yucky smell... not unlike sodom and gomorrah
- Okay shoot me but a Mufaletta did NOT look appetizing to me whatsover even with the ambiance of a cute deli like Luigi's
- Too many bead, mask, t-shirt, plastic alligator shops all over the quarter
Overall I'd LOVE to go back. I was so glad to go with the group that I did. It was a great trip. I feel like I'm forgetting some more high/low points but I'll add them if I think of them. Here are a few photos from the trip. I had to include the photo of my friend Theo and I looking cool, windswept and evil on a balcony overlooking Bourbon Street. And no, I did not show my boobs for beads. I just made Theo go get them for me. :)
The other two photos are in front of the voodoo shop on Bourbon Street and in the Garden District in front of the largest mansion in the neighborhood. Seven of us went so we're only missing two folks from that bottom pic. We got a great pic of all of us at the steamboat that I'll post later.
