Kingdom Hospital
Okay, so I've been watching this "series long mini-series" (15 episodes) since the premiere a few weeks ago and it's pretty bad. Like hokey, corny bad (check out the cast photo, egads). I like Stephen King... sometimes, except for when he does corny crap like this. Apparently this was a mini-series in Europe called The Kingdom by Lars Von Trier. I read the write up on the original and it sounds cool... although if they are using the exact storyline then I ruined it for myself but I doubt it since the new show has the hospital being built over a burned down mill which killed a bunch of children many years ago. Anyway, Stephen King decided to executive produce it and King-ify it. King-ify'ing is the corny trademarks he stamps all over his movies. Take The Stand for example. That was a pretty cool book. The mini-series wasn't bad either except for the hokey show down in Vegas hand of God crapola. Whatever the hell that was. Plus the twangy guitar redneck thing it had going on. Oh... this sucker is set in some New England/Maine locale too. All his stuff is ALWAYS set in Maine.
Kingdom Hospital has an evil dead boy and a good dead girl with bad makeup jobs. A talking anteater with really sharp teeth. Some "writer" who got hit by a van and is messed up and in the hospital (sound familiar? ), the good doctors, the bad doctors, Diane Ladd as a psychic, a talking German Shephard, that has a German accent. Stop the hurting.
Two good things about the show:
1) Andrew McCarthy, I can't believe I'm saying this. I hated him in Pretty in Pink and everything thereafter. I always thought there was something creepy and pre-pubescent about him. For some reason he seems to have "grown up" in his older age plus he looks pretty good and I like his character too. In fact I'll go so far as to say that I actually like him as an actor now.
2) The theme song is awesome. It's called "Worry about you" by Ivy. Apparently it's a few years old but it's so cool. The only clip I could find of it was on the Tower Records site. I could only get the real audio clip to work.
My final verdict is check it out if you're desperate for tv entertainment and/or an Andrew McCarthy fan. At least watch the opening credits for the theme song, THEN change the channel. Also, read a more descriptive review on the show.
Hey I looked up Andrew McCarthy on IMDB and look what I read:
"When the ending to Pretty in Pink (1986) was re-shot, all of the principal actors had to be called back. Andrew McCarthy had already lost a substantial amount of weight and shaved his head for a new role in a New York play called "The Boys of Winter." Although he wore an auburn wig, he's noticeably more gaunt in the reshot scenes."
Re-shot from what? Did Duckie get the girl in the original? Now I have to re-watch the ending.
