Deadwood

**Warning: Strong Language with lots of the C word**

Leave it to HBO to come out with yet another engrossing drama series. Other than Oz I've been hooked on just about every one of them. Sopranos, Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, Carnivale... Deadwood is up to episode ten at this point. I finally got around to watching the ones I have saved up on my UltimateTV box. I haven't caught up quite yet but I've made it through 5 episodes so far.

Yes I like the series, yes it's definitely one I'm going to keep watching. Is it one of my favorites? Probably not but it's entertaining. Timothy Olyphant is always fun to watch because he's hot and all. Keith Carradine is great as Wild Bill Hickock, he's definitely one of my favorites characters for as long as he's on there. I even like the evil nasty saloon owner Al Swearengen. He's like the Michael Corleone of the Old West. There's actually quite a few good actors on the show. The old west backdrop and nasty town politics make for some interesting storylines.

The biggest problems I have with the show are the dirt and the language. Not that I'm not one to swear up a storm from time to time but the dialogue is just over the top. "Cocksucker" and "Fuck" or "Fucker" are by far the most used words on the show, closely followed by "Cunt". If you have sensitive ears then by no means watch this show. It even makes me a bit uncomfortable. I think it actually takes away from the story a bit to have every other word be "cocksucker". From the bad guys maybe, but even the good guys are throwing out the C word liberally left and right. Yeesh. Did people in the old west really talk like that? They don't even swear half that much on the Sopranos. **Note: I just read an article by Old West Historians on the use of language in this show and how accurate it is. Apparently yes, it is indeed accurate. Okay. Fine. Accepted, but still a bit much for me.

The dirt and grit are good and bad. It's realistic to see a dirty dusty western gold mining town. Lots of mud and filth. Probably not many baths. But why are the miners all always streaked in dark brown dirt? The makeup department must have a lot of work on their hands every week with the streaky sweaty look everyone seems to have. That and bruised beaten up whores. That's another nice look. I'm not saying everyone should be squeeky clean but on one episode it looked like they walked through some kind of streaky, dirty assembly line before they started shooting that day. Little over the top. **Note: This show HAS been praised for its gritty accurate and realistic portrayal of life in the Old West.

I don't really have a problem with nudity on shows like this except for the scene with the nasty sweaty brown dirt streaked, gap toothed, pot bellied miner guy holding his dick with his pants around his ankles, naked whore in the background yelling out some unintelligible crap. Was that *really* necessary? It's gonna be awhile before I can get that gross image out of my head. And before I forget I have to mention Calamity Jane. Great acting job, horrible character. The first few episodes showed her as nothing but a manly, surly, overly angry character prone to screaming outbursts at just about everything. It was painful to watch. I had to cringe every time she was on screen cause she'd burst out screaming as if she had tourettes or something. Ow, my eardrums. She's getting a little less annoying as the show goes on but she's definitely one of my least favorite characters to watch.

So would I recommend Deadwood? Only if you're a big fan of HBO dramas or a fan of the Old West. This will be right up your alley. Otherwise I wouldn't tell you to go out of your way to try and catch it like I would the Sopranos or Sex and the City when it was on. My friend Dave loves the show though. He's into history so this is right up his alley. Oh and yes, the show characters are real, with real storylines. It's not all made up.
