Serenity

So I've seen Serenity twice in the last 4 days. It was that good! I don't mean good in the sense that it's oscar worthy fine drama. It's good in the fun, cornball, sci-fi space adventure kind of way. I've read reviews that say it's in the same vein as Star Wars and I wouldn't disagree. It's got that same sense of adventure and excitement to it. It may not spawn billions and billions of crazed fans like Star Wars did but it's one of the most fun movies of its type that I've seen in a long time. In a summer full of huge hollywood blockbuster movies like War of the Worlds, a movie like this, with a little known cast is refreshing to watch.

I never watched Firefly when it was on TV. In some senses I'm sad that I didn't! I really look forward to getting the DVD's now and watching the one season available. It's a shame it didn't run longer it seems but it spawned a great movie. Maybe if this movie is sucessful they'll make more movies or bring it back. Although I hear it's unlikely it will ever come back on TV. More movies are fine though thanks! :) Dave, Anna and I were talking today about how annoying it is to watch a TV show, really get into it then have it get canceled. Anna mentioned that her and Dave start watching shows long after they've been on awhile to avoid this. I can definitely see why. I'm watching quite a few of the new shows right now knowing that I'll get into them only to have them no longer air in the next few weeks/months. They're not all going to make it.

Okay back to the movie. Since I'd never seen the tv show I was apprenhensive about seeing this movie. It seemed kind of cheesy in the previews and knew nothing about the plot or any of the characters before I went. I'm also not a Buffy or Angel fan so I wasn't sure I was going to dig Joss Whedon's style. When the movie first got rolling I was a bit lost... Who ARE these people? Why do they occasionally say things in Chinese? What's with the hokey lines? Basically be being overly critical expecting not to think it was that great because I was clueless about it. Boy was I wrong! After a rocky start I got engrossed in the plot line. I loved the action scenes! Fun to watch. The Reevers were creeppy coolness too. I'm a zombie fan so they were very reminiscent of that for me. I got attached to the characters and there were quite a few funny parts in it. I actually gasped out loud when something traumatic happened in the movie too... I got that into it!

I left the theater wanting to know more about the show. Wanting to see the TV series and replaying it in my head. It kind of reminded me of Battlestar Galactica in a sense (the old one). A friend later told me to check out the new series so I'll have to do that as well since seeing this has renewed my love of the sci-fi adventure genre. I'll actually break away from all my World of Warcraft playing to start watching some new stuff! Anyways.... go see this movie if you want to see a fun light-hearted adventure. There are so many crappy movies out there with overpaid bloated actors and stupid plot lines. Check this one out and support films like this. You won't be sorry!

I'm downloading the DVD w/ all 14 episodes and extras now. It was a pretty good story, although I'm still having a hard time with the Reevers who are pyschotic-cannibals who can still pilot spaceships.

Nitpick!

Saw it again today. It was better the second time around, made more sense.

Think of the Reevers this way, they are people that went the opposite way of the people who were docile. Instead they became angry and enraged. In the movie (more references which I caught today) they talked about the Reevers not being psycho as much as in a state of perpetual rage. So they act out their rage by tearing people apart, torturing them and reveling in their pain (ie, eating them alive etc). They’re still the people they were before, with the knowledge they had before but angry and tortured. It’s like depressed, angry people that do self-mutilation etc. They hurt themselves and others around them to try and satisfy something inside them that they’re not able to.

So it’s not like they’re stupid suddenly and no longer remember how to eat, clothe themselves, fly etc. In the future I’m sure a lot of those people knew how to pilot ships in order to navigate the galaxy.

Hey, I just watched the Pilot episode. It was 90 minutes of awesome adventure. I'm totally hooked now. You're right that all of the same characters from the TV show are in the movie.

This series reminds me alot of Cowboy Bebop, which is one of my favorite anime shows.

We demand a weekly update, even if it only discusses your trials and tribulations in the World of Warcraft. For Example: Spent all week playing World of Warcrat, and my charachter is now a level 67 Paladin with a crossbow of Lord Richard Johnson. That would be enough, it's all we would need. I would not be checking your blog in vain.

Stumbling on your blog has been the result of a series of very random decisions on my half so I am sorry if this is intrusive but your lines of thought are quite evident in your writing and choices of things to natter about and it really kind of caught my eye. Anyway to continue this beam of entropy that i have started i am going to suggest that you read a series that i am sure you will enjoy. youll just have to trust to a little serendipitous event here. you should read Rober Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" Series.

well so long and thank you for making available your thoughts here.

ps. your site of possibilities that is still just a 'maybe' will be a hit if you ever finish it

Uh, how about an update once per month, are we, the fans of Marian, asking too much?
